Textile Architect

Jess Sumpter, also known as [js], is a self-taught, queer contemporary multidisciplinary artist whose work spans across various mediums, including textile design, painting, and performance. Originally from Philadelphia, PA, Jess is currently based in New York City, where their practice has evolved and flourished, informed by their experiences within diverse urban environments. Their art is an exploration of movement, human anatomy, and the liminal space between the physical and the etheric, all while pushing boundaries of texture, color, and form.

Jess’s work is dynamic and tactile, marked by the bold use of color and the layering of rich textures that bring a visceral, almost sculptural quality to their pieces. Whether through woven textiles, intricate stitch work, or expressive brushstrokes, Jess captures the physicality of the human experience, rendering it in vibrant and tactile forms that invite the viewer to connect with the raw energy and emotion of their work.
